India concedes twice late as Germany snatches FIH Pro League win

India squandered a one-goal lead to suffer a 1-2 defeat to reigning world champion Germany in the FIH Pro League in Antwerp on Thursday.

After a goalless first half, India broke the deadlock in the 38th minute when Jugraj Singh converted a Penalty Corner to put the visitor ahead.

The result appeared to set India on course for a second successive win over Germany after Wednesday’s impressive 3-1 victory. But the Germans staged a dramatic late comeback.

Justus Weigand restored parity in the 56th minute by converting a Penalty Corner before Jakob Brilla struck from another Penalty Corner with seconds remaining to snatch victory for the world champion.

The contest lacked rhythm for long periods, with both teams creating limited opportunities. India earned three Penalty Corners, while Germany had five.

India had stunned Germany 3-1 on Wednesday in a memorable victory that also marked Manpreet Singh becoming the country’s most-capped men’s international hockey player.

The veteran midfielder made his 413th appearance, surpassing former captain and current Hockey India president Dilip Tirkey’s record of 412 matches.

India had earlier suffered a 2-3 defeat to Olympic champion the Netherlands on June 14 and will face the Dutch once again on June 21.
