India stunned reigning world champion Germany 3-1 with an inspired performance in the FIH Pro League on Wednesday, celebrating midfielder Manpreet Singh’s record-breaking appearance in style.
The 33-year-old became India’s most-capped hockey player after making his 413th appearance for the national team, surpassing former captain and current Hockey India president Dilip Tirkey, who represented the country 412 times during his illustrious career.
India raced into a 2-0 lead by half-time through field goals from Mandeep Singh in the seventh minute and Shilanand Lakra in the 13th.
Nilakanta Sharma extended the advantage with another field goal in the 35th minute before Germany reduced the deficit through Raphael Hartkopf in the 45th.
The victory came after India suffered a 2-3 defeat to Olympic champion the Netherlands on June 14.
The two sides will meet again in the Pro League on Thursday.
