India Hockey World Cup qualification scenarios: How can Harmanpreet and Co. advance after England loss?

India lost 2-4 to England in their second Pool-D fixture at the ongoing FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup 2026 at the Wagener Stadium in Amstelveen, Netherlands on Monday.

The Harmanpreet Singh-led team had begun its campaign with a 3-1 win over Wales.

However despite this loss to the English, the Indian team still remains in contention to advance to the second group stage, where the top two teams from each current group will further be divided into two more groups.

How can India qualify for Hockey World Cup second group stage?

India will need to make sure it beats arch-rival Pakistan. If the Craig Fulton-coached side gets all three points, it will book its spot in the next stage.

If the Indian team gets a draw, then it will have to hope that Wales doesn’t beat England in their final group-stage fixture.

If India loses to Pakistan, then it will not advance to the second group stage.
