Hockey India on Friday announced cash rewards for the Indian women’s team after its historic fifth-place finish at the Hockey World Cup held in the Netherlands and Belgium.
The Indian team, led by skipper Salima Tete under the guidance of coach Sjoerd Marijne, grabbed the fifth spot after defeating Germany 3-1 in the classification match on Thursday. It is the side’s best performance at the World Cup since its fourth-place finish at the inaugural edition in 1974.
“Hockey India proudly announces cash rewards for the Indian Women’s Hockey Team’s historic performance at the FIH Hockey World Cup Belgium & Netherlands 2026,” said Dilip Tirkey, president of Hockey India in a social media post which mentioned cash rewards of Rs 2 lakh for every player and Rs 1 lakh for every support staff member.
India played six matches in the tournament and lost only to the Dutch team, who is the reigning champion. While it held China, England and Australia to draws, the team bagged a 6-1 victory over South Africa apart from the win against Germany.
It came close to qualifying for the semifinals. In its final game of the second pool stage, it needed a win against Australia but could only manage a goalless draw. India had the same number of points and goal difference as Australia but missed out on a final-four spot on the account of scoring fewer goals.
