Men’s Hockey World Cup 2026: Why was England vs Australia match suspended?

The FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup 2026 5/6th classification match between England and Australia at the Wagener Stadium in Amstelveen, Netherlands, was suspended due to weather conditions.

The Australians led 1-0 at half-time through Blake Govers’ goal.

Before the restart from the third quarter, the match was stopped due to thunder and lightning, as per the commentators. Spectators were also seen vacating the stands, many sporting raincoats.

The winner of this match will finish fifth in the final rankings of the 2026 World Cup, while the loser will take the sixth place.

Both teams got a shot at a fifth-place finish after they failed to finish in the top two of their respective groups in the second round. While England finished third in Pool E, Australia took the third place in Pool F.

The match resumed from the third quarter after a break of about 15 minutes.
