Argentina beat Ecuador 4-2 on penalties on Thursday at the NRG Stadium in the Copa America 2024 quarterfinal. This win booked the defending champion’s berth in the semifinals for the fifth consecutive time in the competition.
Lionel Messi opened Argentina’s penalty shootout with a miss when his attempt hit the crossbar. It was Emiliano Martinez’s two saves that clinched the match for his side.
Julian Alvarez, Alexis Mac Allister, Gonzalo Montiel, and Nicolas Otamendi converted their spot kicks, whereas John Yeboah and Jordy Caicedo scored for Ecuador.
The score was levelled at 1-1 at the end of regulation time after Kevin Rodriguez equalised in 90+3rd minute, to nullify Lisandro Martinez’s first ever international goal which came in the 35th minute.
