India suffered a 1-4 shootout defeat to England after battling to a thrilling 2-2 draw in its FIH Pro League match at the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre in London on Friday.
Dilpreet Singh starred for India with goals in the 10th and 58th minutes, cancelling out strikes from David Goodfield (29’) and Nicholas Bandurak (56’) to force the contest into a shootout.
India started brightly and went ahead when Mandeep Singh set up Dilpreet for a diving finish. England restored parity just before halftime through Goodfield, whose volley found the net after a fortunate deflection inside the circle.
The third quarter remained goalless, with both sides creating chances but unable to break the deadlock. England regained the lead four minutes from time as Bandurak converted a Penalty Corner. India responded almost immediately when Sumit produced a fine run before finding Dilpreet, who fired through the goalkeeper’s legs to level the scores.
England dominated the shootout, with Thomas Sorsby, James Albery and captain Zachary Wallace converting their attempts. Wallace also scored from a Penalty Stroke awarded during the shootout. Harmanpreet Singh was India’s only successful shooter.
