India defeated South Africa by seven runs in a pulsating final on June 29 at Bridgetown in Barbados to win their second T20 World Cup trophy, ending a 17-year wait. Soon after the final, both Virat and Rohit announced their decision to retire from T20Is.
The team returned home after a delay of a few days as hurricane ‘Beryl’ forced the airport in Bridgetown to be closed.
India’s first title win in a T20 World Cup came in the tournament’s inaugural edition in 2007 under skipper MS Dhoni.
The 2024 T20 World Cup win also ended India’s 11-year wait for another ICC trophy, since winning the Champions Trophy in 2013.
