India will have its campaign at the FIH Women’s Hockey World Cup 2026 on the line when it faces Australia at the Wagener Stadium in Amstelveen on Sunday, August 23.
Having lost to Netherlands in its last match, India now needs a victory to keep its slim semifinal hopes alive.
The Sjoerd Marijne-coached team will hope that China doesn’t beat the Dutch. Even if the Chinese draw with Netherlands, it will go to three points. Then, a win will take India’s tally to four points, and to the second spot in the pool.
What happened the last time India and Australia played?
India and Australia are familiar opponents for each other, having played recently. India toured Australia for four matches earlier in the year in Perth.
The series ended 2-2. Australia won the first match 2-1 before India hit back, taking the next two matches consecutively. However, the Aussies levelled the series with victory in the final match of the series to leave things all square.
It has been 16 years since these two sides met in a World Cup match. Their last encounter at the tournament came in 2010, which Australia won 6-3.
