Janneke Schopman and the German Hockey Federation (DHB) have parted ways after the women’s team’s 1-3 loss to India, the Dutchwoman’s former side, in the 5th-6th place match at the Hockey World Cup.
“The German Hockey Federation and women’s national coach Janneke Schopman are parting ways,” said DHB in an official statement.
The 49-year-old Schopman took charge of Die Danas in 2024 after the Paris Olympics. Earlier, she was the head coach of the Indian women’s team but her three-year stint with the ‘Women In Blue’ ended in February after the side failed to qualify for the Summer Games.
Under Schopman, Germany finished runner-up at the European Championships in 2025. In the last two seasons of the FIH Pro League, the team finished seventh and fifth, respectively.
At the ongoing World Cup, being held in the Netherlands and Belgium, two-time champion Germany beat the US and Scotland but lost to Argentina to finish second in Pool B. In the second group-stage, it suffered a defeat against Belgium before taking down Spain but missed out on a spot in the semifinals.
In the 5th-6th place classification match, Germany conceded three quick goals in the second half against India and could not recover. Lynn Krings pulled one back for the European side in the dying stages of the fixture but it proved to be a consolation goal.
