India and Pakistan face very different equations heading into their Hockey World Cup clash on Wednesday.
India is second in Pool D with three points after beating Wales 3-1 and losing 2-4 to England. Pakistan has one point, having drawn with Wales and lost 1-4 to England.
England has already secured a top-two finish, leaving India, Pakistan and Wales fighting for the remaining qualifying spot.
A win would seal India’s place in the next phase, while a defeat would result in elimination. India has a goal difference of zero, compared with -2 for Wales and -3 for Pakistan.
A draw would leave India’s qualification dependent on the result of England’s match against Wales. If England wins or draws, India will qualify, with Wales unable to finish above two points.
The complication arises if Wales beats England. Wales would then also reach four points, forcing the second qualification spot to be decided by the FIH’s tiebreak regulations. Teams level on points are separated first by number of matches won, followed by goal difference and goals scored. Only after those criteria is the result between the tied teams considered.
For Pakistan, the equation is far simpler: it must beat India to keep its World Cup campaign alive.
Wales, meanwhile, also needs to beat England to have any chance of progressing.
The top two teams from each of the four opening pools advance to the second phase, where they will be divided into two new four-team groups. The top two teams from each of those groups will then progress to the semifinals.
