Shreyas Iyer joins MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma in elite India T20I captaincy list despite winless start

Shreyas Iyer‘s luck at the toss continues to shine even as his wait for a maiden victory as India’s full-time T20I captain goes on. The 31-year-old won his fifth consecutive toss in T20Is after electing to field against England in the third T20I at Trent Bridge on Tuesday. In doing so, Iyer joined an elite list of Indian captains to have won five successive tosses in the shortest format.MS Dhoni still holds the record with seven consecutive toss wins between May 2010 and February 2012, while Virat Kohli won six in a row during 2019. Rohit managed five successive toss wins between February 2020 and February 2022, a mark Iyer has now equalled. Most consecutive tosses won by an India captain in T20Is

  • MS Dhoni – 7 (May 2010-February 2012)
  • Virat Kohli – 6 (August 2019-December 2019)
  • Rohit Sharma – 5 (February 2020-February 2022)
  • MS Dhoni – 5 (September 2007)
  • Shreyas Iyer – 5 (June 2026-July 2026)*

However, the toss-winning streak has done little to change India’s fortunes on the field.Since taking over as India’s full-time T20I captain following the 2026 T20 World Cup, Iyer is yet to register his first victory. India suffered back-to-back defeats against Ireland before the opening T20I against England was washed out. They then lost the second T20I in Manchester, leaving Iyer winless in his first four matches as captain heading into the Trent Bridge clash.
